Frequently Asked Questions
What tools do I need to install the adaptor?
The adapter installs with a 3/8” allen-head “L” wrench or socket, a large crescent wrench or a torque wrench with a 3/4 inch 8pt socket and 1-1/8 inch wrench. The socket we use is Proto brand 1/2” Drive, 3/4” Standard Impact Socket 8 points, 1-1/2” Overall Length. Mfr Part# J7424S
What are the torque specs on the collar?
There is not really a torque spec on the collar – the allen-head screws need to be flush to the outside of the collar to be properly installed.
What are the torque specs on the adapter cap screw and adjustment bolts?
The cap screw and bolts should be torqued to 110 ft/lbs. There are instruction sheets in circulation that say 185 ft/lbs. This was an error due to an invalid product test data earlier in 2016. The correct torque to maintain a safe connection is the 110 ft/lbs.
I don’t need to adjust the height of the adapter... do I need to torque the adjustment bolts?
YES. We do not torque the bolts to the full spec before they leave the factory. This is so customers that do have to adjust the height can do so without having to force the bolts loose. If you do not torque the bolts before towing, the adapter could slip up and down on the lower portion.
I have adjusted the adapter to the full height but need more... can I tow with the red line showing?
NO. The red line is the margin for the adapter to be used safely.
I cannot get the allen-head screws to move with my little wrench.
The screws may be very tight, so you may need to get a length of pipe for the L shaped wrench or a longer socket wrench to apply enough torque. If they want, with the collar off the kingpin, they can drive the allen-head screws all the way through the collar into the middle and then re-insert them from the outside, this will burn off some of the lock-tight.
How do I bolt the offset to my kingpin box?
To bolt the C5GX to the kingpin box requires you mark and drill 1/2″ holes in the kingpin box. To tap and dye the kingpin box – mark and drill a 27/64″ holes and use a 1/2″ #13 tap to thread the hole.
I have the offset adapter, but my trailer is somewhere I don’t have tools to drill. Can I tow it safely?
Yes, for short distances. Attach the adapter per the instructions. Carefully tow the trailer to your destination. At the first opportunity, bolt the offset to the kingpin box.
I have a straight adapter... do I need to bolt it to the kingpin box?
No. Customers could choose to bolt the adapter to the kingpin box, but it is not required. If in the EXTREMELY UNLIKELY situation that the adapter binds on the gooseneck ball and the adapter collar spins on the kingpin, it does not result in the truck and trailer becoming misaligned.
What bolts are in the Bolt Kit?
The bolt kit consists of four Grade 5, 1/2 in. bolts that are 1 1/2 in. long with nuts and washer. We do provide bolt kits via US Mail free of charge, but the hardware can be found anywhere bolts are sold.
I bought a straight adapter but need the offset.... can I just buy the offset platform?
NO. The two models are not interchangeable. For safety reasons, if you use the straight body on an offset platform, it has an extra 2 inches that if used improperly could break the casting.
I bought an offset adapter... can I take the platform off and use it as a straight adapter?
NO. While it is physically possible to do that, we cannot recommend the use. You lose 2 inches of height, now making your adapter adjustable from 10 to 14 inches and the safety line is painted in the wrong location. These could lead to improper use.
Etrailer states the C5G line is not recommended for use on the late model Ford, Dodge and Nissan OEM gooseneck balls - why?
That type of gooseneck ball has the release mechanism in the top of the ball and is made out of plastic. If used with ANY adapter, not just ours, the metal on metal interaction will deform the plastic and you will not be able to release the ball from your bed. Etrailer carries an OEM replacement from Curt that has a metal handle in place of the plastic, which MAY work better than the plastic handle.
ALSO, the safety chains provided with our units are too short to reach the four “PUCK” connectors used in these systems, requiring the purchaser to buy additional chains.
My trailer dealer says if I use your adapter it will void my new trailer’s warranty. Is this true?
YES. Almost all trailer manufacturers put in the trailer’s warranty that if you tow with any modified system other than the intended Kingpin system, IT WILL VOID YOUR TRAILER’S WARRANTY. They do this, claiming that modifications such as a gooseneck ball adapter produce forces outside the range of what the kingpin box was designed to handle. The great thing about our product is that the cushioning system actually reduces these forces, saving wear and tear on your trailer, pin box and truck. BUT it is the trailer manufacturer’s warranty, not ours and if you choose to use our adapter, it could put that warranty at risk.
I have a short bed & the offset. Why do instructions say the adapter may restrict turning radius?
The offset is designed to move the cab of the truck away from the nose of the trailer, it does so by making the king pin box longer. Most truck beds are 30 inches from center to the side rails. If using our adapter makes your king pin box longer than 30 inches you run the risk of impacting the back of the king pin box into your side rails if you do not have sufficient height to clear the rails. Why aren't the nut and washer stainless steel on the 106?
2 reasons – the coast of stainless nut and washer greatly increases the price of the part, and, like metals tend to gall or seize.
Can I get new pins for the balls?
Yes, but they must be factory installed. Please send your parts back to us so that we can repair & return to you.
I have a (_____) trailer, can i use your product with it?
A few pinboxes & trailers are not compatible with our adaptor. Rota-Flex 5th Wheel boxes, Reese 5th Airborne Sidewinder & Turret Pin box, any pinbox with a swinging plate or any pin box that turns.
Why won't this work with a Rota Flex?
Rotoflex has a swinging plate which is not compatible with our 5th wheel converters.
What size are the bolts in a bolt kit?
4 each – 1/2 – 13 x 1 1/2 Hex cap, Grade 5, Zinc with flat washer, lock washer and nuts.
